Expert Lecture on Global Prospects of Wind Energy Generation at OIST

An expert lecture was organized by the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering on 09/03/2017 on “Global Prospects of Wind Energy Generation”. The session was attended by the faculty and students of VI & VIII semester of Deptt. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Thomas Ackermann, CEO and founding partner of Energynautics GmbH, a Germany based research and consulting company in the area of renewable and distributed generation, was the expert speaker. He is also the author of the famous book “Wind Power in Power Systems” published by Wiley & Sons U.K.

He apprised the students about the growth of Renewable Energy especially photovoltaic and wind. He emphasized that India is very suitable for renewable energy, if harnessed properly and the country has very high targets in the next 5-10 years. The Indian Power System structure will also have to be redesigned to adjust to the needs of Renewable market. In addition to storage which is a major challenge in Renewable energy the research should to be oriented to develop better power system planning models and methods to improve power transfer capability. Lastly, he also briefed about the Off Shore wind generation development in Germany and transmission through HVDC cables.

The expert session was also graced by the presence of Dr. Eckehard Troster, CEO and founder of Energynautics GmbH and a Ph.D from Darmstadt University of Technology, Institute of Electric Power Systems, Section Renewable Energies, Germany and Dr. Joshua Earnest, HOD Deptt. of Electrical Engg. NITTTR Bhopal.

Prof. N.K. Mittal, Director (P& D) and Dr. Kavita Burse, Director, OIST emphasized the necessity of such programmes for enhancing the awareness amongst young engineers.
