Two day workshop on ‘Alternative Fuels’ 3-4 March 2015

A two day workshop on ‘Alternative Fuels’ was organized by department of Mechanical & Automobile Engineering for Fourth and Sixth semester students.

Day 1 began with HOD Mechanical welcoming the expert, Dr Anil Kumar Dubey, Principal Scientist, Central Institute of Agriculture Engineering (CIAE), Bhopal. Dr Dubey is a eminent scientist with many innovations, product development and several papers to his credit. His main areas of interest are biomass gasifiers, solar thermal, briquetting etc.

Dr Dubey explained the technology of ‘biomass gasifiers’ in brief to students. India has surplus biomass (crop residue) after feeding cattle and several thousand mega watts of energy can be developed from it using biomass gasifiers. The electricity produced from such gasifiers is not only economical and sustainable but is eco-friendly as well. Also one doesn’t require a huge capital to set up such gasifier units. It saves precious foreign exchange which is spent for purchasing crude oil and so on.

The talk was followed by a visit to nearby gasifier power plant approximately 20 kms from Institute campus located at roadside and 10 kms from Raisen. The ‘Gasifier Power Plant’ was conceived, designed and developed by Dr Anil Ku Dubey aided by Govt of India under ‘National Agricultural Innovation Project’. Dr Dubey explained in detail the functioning of the power plant to students. The plant is self sufficient, i.e. it doesn’t draws any power from the grid for running any of its functions. The surplus power produced is given to a water filteration plant adjacent to it. Students keenly took interest in the working of the plant and asked thoughtful questions.

Day 2 began with a expert talk by Dr Aseem Tiwari, professor and head (Mechanical & Automobile) on ‘Biodiesel & Biofuels’ for 1.5 hours. Dr Tiwari took students through a very exhaustive insight into the chemistry, manufacturing & testing of biodiesel and biofuel. The program was quite informative and interactive.
