OIST Bhopal Civil students experiment on soil strengthening through jute

Reinforcement of soil is an important technique to improve its building properties. The final year students of Civil Engineering students of OIST Bhopal extended this idea by confirming its applicability to locally available soil. The students performed numerous California Bearing Ratio Tests on normal and jute reinforced locally collected soil samples with varying jute content and found that the bearing characteristics of soil increases by 75%, with jute.

The positive results have huge applications in rural transportation network, where it can reduce the cost of construction and maintenance of road pavements and generate employment opportunities for the local people as well. The students hope to work further in this direction.
